Located along the Missouri River, Omaha became an early transportation hub. Its warehousing and shipping industries thrived, attracting steamboats from the Eastern United States as well as the Union Pacific Railroad. Its meatpacking, stockyard and regional brewing industries also grew.

In the latter warehouse company,  the city’s economic fortunes varied widely. But by the mid-1920s it had emerged as a major wholesale jobbing center, importing food from the Midwest and selling it to local grocery stores through traveling salesmen. The city’s proximity to the geographic center of the country and its low utility rates contribute to its competitive business environment. As a result, the city’s industrial sector has been one of the strongest in the country. It is home to a number of large corporations, including First National of Nebraska, the largest privately held bank in the U.S., as well as three Fortune 1000 financial service companies: Berkshire Hathaway, Mutual of Omaha and TD Ameritrade.

In recent years, the city has developed a strong retail and office market. Its many shopping centers include Westroads Mall, Oak View Mall and Village Pointe in Papillion. Omaha also offers upscale outdoor malls such as Shadow Lake Towne Center and One Pacific Place. It is home to many high-end retailers including Nebraska Furniture Mart, Mrs. B’s Clearance and Factory Outlet and a Bose Store in the Appliances building.
